El nuevo Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ocupa su lugar al frente de las competencias de Fórmula 1 equipado con dos monitores para observar todas las alternativas de cada carrera mientras una C 63 AMG Estate estará una vez mas como el Official F1™ Medical Car.
El campeonato mundial de Fórmula 1 comenzará en Manama/Bahrain entre los días 12 y 14 de Marzo de 2010 y marcará el debut del mas espectacular y poderoso Official F1™ Safety Car de todos los tiempos. El trabajo de del nuevo Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG es el de asegurar la máxima seguridad en las carreras de F1. Este modelo “alas de gaviota” reemplaza al SL 63 AMG que fuera usado como el Official F1™ Safety Car durante 2008 y 2009. Como durante los dos últimos años, una Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Estate será utilizada como el Official F1™ Medical Car al comienzo de la temporada.
Desde Marzo de 2010, el Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Official F1™ Safety Car estará donde sea que una situación azarosa como un accidentes o el mal tiempo que pueda convertir en riesgosa la carrera. El Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, piloteado por Bernd Mayländer, un Alemán de 38 años, estará ubicado en la pit lane durante toda la carrera. Cuando el control de la carrera de la orden correspondiente, el vehículo entrará en la pista para colocarse como guía de seguridad para los autos intervinientes, hasta que el problema sea solucionado.
El Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG tiene las mejores credenciales para esa tarea tan específica ya que su motor V8 de 6.3 litros genera un pico de potencia que alcanza los 571 HP y un torque máximo de 650Nm que lo habilitan a acelerar de 0 a 100 Km/h en tan solo 3.8 segundos. Estas características le permiten al Official F1™ Safety Car, una muy alta velocidad en las vueltas de seguridad ya que, de otra manera, las cubiertas de los autos de carrera se enfriarían rapidamente mientras que sus motores se recalentarían.
Por supuesto, también cuenta con un chasis de diseño espectacular, suspensiones especiales, frenos de materiales compuestos y transmisión de doble embrague y 7 velocidades AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7.
Desde hace 14 años y en forma continuada, AMG ha sido el proveedor del Official F1™ Safety Car y del Official F1™ Medical Car para la categoría tope del international motorsport.
Ya en 1984 un AMG Coupé de la Clase E con un motor V8 fue utilizada ocasionalmente como el Medical Car.
